What is Sleep Apnoea?

There are three types of Sleep Apnoea – Obstructive, Central and Mixed. Obstructive is the most common form.   The symptoms are often first spotted by someone close to you and you are unlikely to have any memory of your interrupted breathing.  Symptoms can include:

  • loud snoring
  • interrupted breathing
  • noisy and laboured breathing, gasping or snorting
  • night sweats
  • waking up frequently during the night to urinate

How I can Help You With Sleep Apnoea

If you come to see me, I will normally ask you to use a Sleep Diary, to inform the coaching and therapy. Sleep Diaries themselves are very powerful catalysts for change.

  • Sleep training – on its own or with other options below
  • Hypnotherapy can help you to sleep peacefully and comfortably while wearing a positive airway pressure (CPAP) device (Mask) or mandibular advancement device (MAD) (gum shield)
  • I can help you re-train your mind and body to focus on relaxing, while keeping your airways open, anticipating at wonderful refreshing night’s sleep as you easily and quickly drift off to asleep and breathe deeply and wake refreshed.
  • Sleep Diary
    You can keep Sleep Diary to record how tired you are, how much sleep you are getting, your routines, diet, alcohol etc. This will help you identify areas of your life that may be getting in the way of your sleep. Sleep Diaries themselves are very powerful catalysts for change.
  • Life Coaching
    You may want to make changes to your life style and routines and I can help you identify which to prioritise and help you find it easy and enjoyable to make the changes. These might include:
  • Weight loss
  • Letting go of anxiety
  • Enjoying a healthy diet
  • Cutting down on recreational drugs, alcohol, giving up smoking etc
  • Avoiding the use of sleeping tablets and tranquillisers
  • introducing exercise into your routine everyday
  • Transform the Cause
    Stress is a major cause of many sleep disorders and ill health. We can explore the cause of your Apnoea – why your unconscious mind is ‘doing’ this behaviour – and transform subconscious emotions and blocks that may have led to apnoea – or life style factors that have contributed to the apnoea.
  • Self-Hypnosis
    You can use self-hypnosis to increase feelings of comfort and relaxation, and include instructions to your mind to breathe regularly throughout the night. You can use self-hypnosis throughout your life for many issues.
  • Breathing Techniques
    You can use these to relax or energise, and breathing techniques can also help snoring.

  • Meditation
    As little as 10 minutes twice a day can be very beneficial in the longer term as it will give you a method of progressively becoming more still, more focused, more present and more in charge of both your mind and body. I teach simple, modern forms of meditation – no need to shut out thoughts or sit in uncomfortable positions. If you can think, I can teach you to meditate.

It is essential to see your GP if you or someone else suspects you have Sleep Apnoea. Treatment is simple and effective, but some people find it hard to get used to wearing a mask or gum shield and this is where Hypnotherapy comes into its own

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The CPAP Mask/ Gum Shield Programme is designed to help you feel comfortable wearing a Mask or Gum Shield, and around three or four sessions, spread over a few months, will normally be sufficient.

If you want to make deeper changes, I recommend the Sleep Transformation Programme (8 sessions) as that combines all the above areas and gives time to work through complex issues and create the changes you want in your life.
