Bedwetting or Nocturnal Enuresis is the involuntary act of urinating at night. It is very common and affects many children and some adults.

There are two types: first, where the person has never been consistently dry at night; second, where the person has been dry. There are many possible causes including infections, trauma, diabetes, or other sleep disorder such as Sleep Apnoea.

How I Can Help You With Bed Wetting

There are a number of ways I can help you, from a few sessions of Sleep Training to a longer programme of coaching and therapy. What is best for you depends on how severe your problem is and whether there are any other issues present, such as stress.

Sleep Training

I can help you re-train your mind and body to focus on:

  • Relaxing as you fall asleep, anticipating a wonderful refreshing night’s sleep, staying relaxed and dry throughout the night.
  • Using hypnotic suggestions for your unconscious mind to wake up to if you need to urinate
  • Countering anxious thoughts and expectations about that night’s sleep
  • Turn off stressful thinking and quieten an over-active mind
  • Encouraging feelings of safety

It is advisable to check with your GP to rule out any ill health and if you are on medication, whether this could be a side effect.

  • Self-Hypnosis and Breathing exercises
    I can teach you Self-Hypnosis and Breathing exercises to use as maintenance skills throughout your life with many issues.
  • Meditation
    Meditation – as little as 10 minutes twice a day can be very beneficial as it will give you a method of progressively becoming more still, more focused, more present and more in charge of both your mind and body. I teach simple, modern forms of meditation – no need to shut out thoughts or sit in uncomfortable positions.
  • Sleep Diary
    Diaries are powerful catalysts for change and you can record not just when incidents happen but also your sleep, what you are doing during the day and evening, stressful events, what you are eating and drinking, alcohol and other stimulants, stressful situations and emotions that occur. The diary may highlight changes you could make to your routines or lifestyle.
  • Life Coaching
    If there are changes you want to make to your routines or life style, I can help you explore your priorities and establish new helpful routines that support your health and wellbeing. I will help you set realistic goals, and support you as you work towards achieving them.
  • Root Cause
    I will ask you about when the issue started and whether there was an event or stress in your life at that time. I then can help you resolve any root cause. If the Bedwetting has been brought on by trauma, then resolving the trauma or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is advisable. NLP can be very effective and quick at healing PSTD and traumatic memories. Dr William C Kohler MD, author of Hypnosis in the Management of Sleep Disorders, and a pioneer in Sleep Clinics and Sleep Medicine in America, sees hypnosis as a valuable technique for treating bedwetting. He sees hypnosis as self-empowering, safe, inexpensive, and the effect is potentially long lasting. He notes that medications often have side effects.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Everyone is different and makes changes at different speeds and we can discuss what is best for you on the phone.

Bed Wetting can be fairly complex, so I recommend the Sleep Transformation Programme (8 sessions) as that combines all the above areas and gives time to work through root cause and create the changes you want in your life. It will also equip you with skills such as meditation, self-hypnosis and positive self-talk that you will be able to use in the future if you encounter sleep or other issues in future.
